Free Women's Self Defense Program (Lexington, MA)

Krav Maga Yashir has been providing a free women’s self-defense program since 2010, without grants or funding from any organizations or enterprises. The school has been doing this using both in-person classes and virtual/online training resources. The program is geared towards threats and dangers that tend to target women as opposed to men e.g., rape and sexual assault, abusive partners (including IPV – Intimate Partner Violence, as well as stalking and harassment. Whilst men can be the targets of these types of violence, statistically women are at a greater risk of them. The complete program consists of a series on in-person seminars that coupled with the online resources provide both the necessary physical and non-physical skills to deal with these types of violence. Our program is research and evidentially based and isn’t founded on well-intentioned but unproven and unsupported advice e.g., it is well understood that when it comes to rape and sexual assault women are most at risk of being assaulted in their own homes or the homes of friends, by somebody they know, however many women’s self-defense programs still focus on stranger based attacks in public places etc.

As well as teaching straightforward unarmed solutions to attacks such as grabs, holds and chokes etc., our program also has a module that looks on how to effectively use OC/Pepper spray. This self-defense tool is legal to own and carry in Massachusetts (though it can’t be delivered by post e.g., ordered off Amazon etc.), and is an extremely effective tool for personal protection. Our online resources discuss the different types of spray e.g., cones, stream, foams, and gels etc., and the environments where each has its own advantages. There isn’t one type that is universally “better” than the others. It also talks about the pros and cons of different trigger types etc., and how to select a spray that is appropriate for your needs. Our in-person seminar uses inert sprays to give attendees the chance to practice using these sprays when under a degree of pressure and stress and duress. Whilst these units are simple to use there are some basic and common errors that people make when using them which seriously decrease their effectiveness. These are easily rectified and once understood can be eradicated.
